Will the table be professionally moved and assembled in its new location?
Many new tables come with delivery and setup, but used tables generally don't. Improper moving techniques may damage the slate or frame. Do not try moving a table in one piece or just by taking the legs off. This can ruin a slate table instantly and fixing the resulting problems usually costs more money than hiring someone to move it properly from the beginning. Don't forget about stairs - there is usually an additional fee per flight. You may not have stairs, but the table may be upstairs in the current home
Does the table need new cloth?
Budget at least $225 for new cloth to be installed. Remember though, it is NOT necessary to change the cloth when moving a table. If the cloth is carefully removed from the table, chances are it can be used again. Most cloth changes are for cosmetic reasons.
Where has the table been stored?
If the table had been in direct sunlight, rubber cushions, cloth or leather pockets may be damaged. Cloth that is faded won't affect the play of the table. But, it may be a sign the cushion rubber or leather has begun to deteriorate.
How old is the table?
If the table is more than 20 years old cushion rubber or leather pockets may need to be replaced. Ask to play a game on the table if possible to see how the cushions react. You may pay more than $200 just to replace cushion rubber.
Are there accessories such as chalk, balls, triangle and cues?
Check the cues if possible. They may be warped or missing tips. Count all of the balls. There should be fifteen and a cue ball.
Lastly, is this the right table for me?
Do not let your wallet shield your eyes from looking at the table's construction. Lean on the table and make sure it doesn't wobble or move. If it has a ball return - TEST IT! If it doesn't work now, it probably won't work in your house either. This purchase should last many years to come, so think of it as an investment and choose carefully.
