What is Pool Table Slate?

Slate is a fine-grained, foliated, homogeneous metamorphic rock derived from an original shale-type sedimentary rock composed of clay or volcanic ash through low-grade regional metamorphism. In other words it’s stone which the billiard industry uses exclusively for creating the playfield of a pool or billiards table. Billiard table manufacturers have been using slate for hundreds of years.
