Why a Free Pool Table Can Cost More Than Expected

Is it REALLY free?

It isn’t any secret that a new slate pool table isn’t necessarily an cheap addition to your household. Buying used, can be a great way to enjoy playing billiards in your home without breaking the budget. So when a family member, friend or stranger offers you a free pool table, you are ready to jump at the opportunity.

But, wait. Please hear me out. Do you know the cost of a free pool table?

There are a few things you should really consider before committing to a free pool table.

  1. Does the table need any repair as it sits now? Some things are plainly obvious, like cracked leather pockets or torn felt. Others are less obvious, such as cushions that do not bounce.
  2. Do you like the way it looks, just as it stands currently? New color cloth can be installed, but refinishing/re-staining can get expensive.
  3. What do you know about the pool table? Have you properly measured it? Do you know if it has three pieces of slate or one? These are the two most important things you need to know when budgeting for repairs and moving. Speaking of moving…
  4. How are you going to move it to its new home? Improper moving techniques can not only damage the pool table, but also cause injury. A pool table should NOT be moved in one piece with 3-10 really strong people. It is wise to hire a professional mover. The cost of this can vary, based on distance, size and number of slates.
  5. Are there stairs involved? Stairs can be a deal breaker for many folks, especially when moving a one piece slate.
  6. Lastly, do you have adequate space? Don’t forget that just because the table fits in a room, doesn’t necessarily mean that you have enough cue space.

We will never discount, sentimental value of a pool table. Many fond memories can go along with a pool table handed down from the previous generation(s). And, there are many well made pool tables that warrant repair to give them a second or third life. But, know there are also poorly crafted ones, that cost more to fix than they will ever be worth.

Remember, your “free” pool table can cost anywhere from $300 to over $1000 when factoring in costs of moving/repair. Both our FAQ and service price list can help you figure things out.

what is beeswax used for installing 3 piece slate?

Beeswax is used to seal the seams of the slate. It can be melted, then scraped after it dries.
